Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season. We are grateful for all of our customers that ordered art for this holiday season. You kept us quite busy filling all the orders for Santa to deliver but we made it!

We have just acquired two of Gary Crouch's Texas prints titled "Texas Visionaries" which has been sold out for some time. It was one of Gary's best sellers and the next two people that place an order can be the owner of these last two prints for $79.00 each unframed. The Texas Visionaries print traces the origin of the Texas Lone Star Flag, following its history from the time of the American Revolution until the current Lone Star Flag was adopted in 1838, with the history of each flag.

SLEEPY CELEBRATES 90 YEARS!

Delbert "Sleepy" Read celebrated his 90th birthday recently with a host of family and friends at the Liberty Hotel in Cleburne, Texas. "Sleepy" still paints most days at The Wright Place. He has a small gallery there with his easel and paints set up where shoppers can watch him paint. He has painted hundreds of bluebonnet scenes as well as western art and particularly likes to do abstracts in bold colors.
Most of the elementary and middle schools in Cleburne have large murals in their cafeterias done by Sleepy. Usually he incorporates the school's mascot in the painting. Recently he helped his son Stylle paint a huge mural across from The Wright Place depicting the history of Cleburne. Both his sons and brothers are also artists.

Dudley began painting at the early age of around eight. With no canvases to be had at the time, the budding artist used cardboard. Her earliest inspiration came from visits with an aunt who painted. The little artist was fascinated by the brushes and paints displayed in her aunt’s home and longed for her own. When her wish was granted, it was a dream-come-true for the little girl who knew she would one day become an artist. Using a colorful palette that brings the viewer into her scenes, Dudley also favors figurative pieces that often include her grandchildren, other family members, and close friends.

Tim lives in Bloomfield N.M. with his wife Suzie. They have a son Jake attending vet school at Colorado State. His wife Carmin does medical transcription work and they have a little daughter C.J. (Tim and Suzie's granddaughter) Their daughter Calla worked at a large cattle ranch in New Mexico but now has returned to Bloomfield where she breaks and trains their horses.

I had an email this week from a lady that had inherited two paintings from her grandmother and discovered that Texas Art Mart had some of this artist's work. She was looking for some background on the artist and wanted to see if she could get an estimate on the value of her paintings.

We contacted the artist and found information that she was looking for. Just one more way we try to serve our customers.

The artist she was inquiring about is Delbert "Sleepy" Read. We have several pictures of his work on our web page and will continue to add more. This elderly gentleman still paints every day even though his eyesight is beginning to fail and his hearing is almost gone. "Sleepy" thinks his art is selling good now because he says, "They think it will increase in value after I'm gone".

The center shows a 1918 oil field on the Texas-Oklahoma state line. The Texas flag flies on the Texas side and Oklahoma flag on the Oklahoma side. On the outside of the print is shown early drilling equipment and companies of today.

The Second one is Triple Play. 'Sleepy' Read at work

'Sleepy' is a Johnson County, Texas artist near 90 who still paints six days a week. He is mainly self-taught but still occasionally takes classes to improve his technique. He has a small gallery located in Cleburne, Texas at the Wright Place located at 115 South Main. "Sleepy" especially likes abstracts but also does bluebonnets, landscapes, westerns etc. He has painted murals in several school cafeterias. He can be found painting in the gallery most every day except Saturdays. I will be posting some of “Sleepy’s” original oil paintings on our web page. Artist Ronnie Hedge Dies

Many fans of artist R. W. "Ronnie" Hedge, 55, were saddened to learn of the unexpected death of Ronnie on Friday, April 16 at his home in Oklahoma. Ronnie was formerly from Keller, Texas. He was a self-taught artist that was well known for his nature scenes in Texas, Arizona, Colorado and Wisconsin. The spotlight today is on "Sleepy" Read of Cleburne. Sleepy is an 88 year old artist that loves to paint. In fact he gets up every day and paints. Whether it is oils, acrylics or whatever the mood strikes him he works on a painting every day. He does westerns, landscapes, bluebonnets and abstracts. Each elementary school cafeteria in Cleburne has a mural on the wall done by him. Whatever the school mascot is, he includes in the painting. The picture illustrated here is a limited edition signed and numbered barn scene print size 11 x 14. He was honored a few months ago with a special night at Texas Art Mart and all the attendees received a signed copy of this print. Below are some helpful tips on using art for your decor.

The Art of Hanging Art

1. Hang big art in a large space and small art in a small space.
2. Place the center of the picture at your eye level.
3. In hanging large art over a large piece of furniture or fireplace
make sure the picture is not longer than the furniture. About
2/3 or 3/4 of the length of the furniture is about right.
4. Select the size hanger appropriate for the weight of the art.
5. Use two hangers on everything except very small art.

GROUPING ART

Displaying art in groups is a good way to fill wall space whether it be a large or small space. Using similar or matching frames will bring unity but is not necessary if the theme or colors already provide it.

HORIZONTAL DISPLAYS : Use the largest piece in the center and smaller ones on each side.

VERTICAL DISPLAYS : Stack art on top of each other with the frames almost touching.

MOSAIC DISPLAYS : I would start by lining up the outside pieces with all outside edges forming a square and filling in the middle in the inside space. The spacing will be irregular as you work toward the middle but it works because the edges form a regular shape.

ASYMETRICAL DISPLAYS: With three pieces you would stack the two smaller pieces on top of each other and a larger piece beside the two smaller ones.

"Well I'll Be" is the latest print by artist Gary Crouch. The independent oil man is pictured walking across his land when he comes upon an area where oil is bubbling up out of the ground and thus the title, "We'll I'll be". He carries a copy of his oil lease in his shirt pocket. Surrounding the picture are various oil pumping components, some from bygone eras. Also logos of different oil and gas companies are shown. The print measures 24 x 30.

These past few days have gifted us just enough warm weather, early blooming flowers and budding trees to start a serious case of bluebonnet fever. For those of you who don't live in Texas, the bluebonnet is our state flower. But like so many things, it isn't as simple as that. Historian Jack Maguire put it best; "It's not only the state flower but also a kind of floral trademark almost as well known to outsiders as cowboy boots and the Stetson hat...The bluebonnet is to Texas what the shamrock is to Ireland, the cherry blossom to Japan, the lily to France, the rose to England and the tulip to Holland." At Texas Art Mart we have taken the snow scenes out of the window and filled it with bluebonnets. No flower has inspired Texas artists like the bluebonnet, the choices are unlimited, from the simplest print to original oils on canvas. Unfortunately the choices for viewing the real thing this year are going to be more limited. With the driest conditions in 60 years much of Texas will not enjoy the lush bluebonnet bloom of years past. The traditional areas such as the Hill Country have been hit the worst but areas to the east & south of Dallas/Ft. Worth received enough moisture to still provide us with the promise of good bloom. Usually the bloom peaks about Easter time which is April 12th this year but I suspect with these weather conditions we might count on extending that date by a week or so. For those of you looking for a good day trip or some photo opportunities, Ennis, just south of Dallas & east of Waxahachie, is home of the official Texas Bluebonnet Trail and they are reporting an abundance of plants promising a good show.
